If you love seafood, Buntal 88 Seafood Center is one of good seafood restaurant that well known by locals, and they price is just nice and fair for family dinner. The location is near to the sea, which explain why the ingredient for seafood is fresh and tasty. My friend who are staying in Kuching, is the one introduce me to this place and thanks to him I can taste local delicacy that makes my tongue and stomach happy. When I search about Buntal 88 seafood center, it is quite well known even for overseas tourist.
It is typical local chinese restaurant, so you can expect dining in round tables with chairs. Typically they serve the rice in plates with fork and spoon, but you can request to serve in bowl with chopsticks. They also do serve beers, and you can find Tsingtao, chinese brand beer that well known in mainline china. You also can bring your own seafood and asked them to cook for you. It is roughly RM 20 / KG for cooking dishes. When we comes to this place, actually we had bought prawns and crabs. Simply we can’t resist when we saw it on the road side.
This is the crab dishes. The owner asked us to try their speciality sauce that made by them. So half of our crab goes with their speciality sauce, and the other half we ask them to cooked in salted egg. We love salted egg dishes, and since we did not bring wife during this meal, we can go all out. One thing that for sure, in my opinion, their speciality sauce are made from high quality of soy sauce, garlic oil, and chinese wine. The other ingredient I am not really sure since the taste is quite faint. It is really worth to try and personally I like it. Just that it is a little bit spicy so if you can’t take spicy you can ask for less chilli.
Our prawn dish is cooked with the same speciality sauce. Now it is really goes well with the prawn. We get the prawn is fresh, so the sweetness really goes well with the sauce. Plus, it is spicy. I really need to give big thumb to the chef. They cooked the prawn nicely done. Still maintain the crunchiness and sweetness of the prawn despite strong spices.
This is local vegetables. I remember someone mention that it is ‘Paku’. In Indonesian language, it means nail. Probably the vege shape is almost look like long needle. You should try this one if you are at Kuching. Since it is cheap and available almost every where here. Meanwhile in West Malaysia, it is a bit hard to find.
Now this vege is something that I did not expect to be this outstanding. It is bitter gourd. I told my friend that I am not really like bitter gourd, but he said that I need to try this one since it is really special and can change my perspective towards it. I trust him and indeed this dish is really outstanding. It coated with salted egg and fried until it is crispy.
Our last dish that we order is oyster egg, it is actually pretty much normal with other oyster egg dishes that you can find in any shop of Malaysia chinese restaurant. One thing that I do really like is the oyster is generous in portion.
Overall, this restaurant is worth one star. The food is superb, the way how the chef handling seafood, especially prawn, is exceptional. Good for family dinner and big group, so you can order more dishes. If I go visit kuching again, I wish to come here again.
